Comprehensive Audiological Evaluation
At The Hearing Center, we want to assure you that your hearing loss is not due to a more serious medical problem. You will receive a comprehensive evaluation consisting of all diagnostic tests that are warranted due to your history and current hearing status. This thorough evaluation allows us to determine solutions for your hearing difficulties and make a medical referral if necessary. The Hearing Center has two ENT Physicians, Dr. Derek Jones and Dr. Adam Holdt, who work closely with our audiologists to assist in medical management of ear problems and hearing health.
Hearing Aid Services
The Hearing Center provides in-office preventative maintenance and cleaning to nearly all makes and models of hearing aids. We are able to troubleshoot devices and counsel on proper use and care. If you are experiencing trouble with your hearing aid or you just need some help cleaning it, feel free to come into the office during our walk-in hours so we can help. Please note that any volume adjustments or feedback issues require an appointment.
Cochlear Implant Mapping
To better serve the hard-of-hearing community of Northwest Florida and Southeast Alabama, The Hearing Center began offering cochlear implant mapping in 2010. We are currently offering mapping services for patients who use devices manufactured by Cochlear Americas and Advanced Bionics.
The Baha® System is an implantable hearing device that works through bone conduction to open up a whole new world of hearing to those suffering from conductive hearing loss, mixed hearing loss and single-sided deafness. This technology has helped change the lives of more than 120,000 people; and thanks to the latest innovations in bone conduction hearing, that number will only continue to rise. Our ENT doctors perform the surgery to place the implant, and once healed, The Hearing Center audiologists program and activate the device.
Videonystagmography (VNG) Testing
VNG testing is designed to help your physician determine if vestibular dysfunction is present that may be causing dizziness or imbalance.
VNG testing assesses your balance system, which is controlled by
• The inner ear (vestibular system)
• The eyes (vision)
• Sense of touch (proprioception)
Symptoms of Balance Problems:
• Vertigo (sensation of movement)
Vestibular disorders can be challenging to diagnose due to the potential to involvement from multiple systems of the body.
Your doctor will obtain a thorough medical history and may order several types of testing, including:
A true diagnosis may involve ruling out other medical conditions. Your condition may be short-term (acute) or long-term (chronic).
Preparation for the VNG test
• Do not wear any makeup or moisturizer of any kind on the eyes or face. No mascara or eye liner!
• Do not wear contacts or glasses during the test.
• Discuss your current medications with your physician. Some medications can affect the outcome of the VNG.
• Do not take anti-vertigo or nausea medicine 48 hours prior to testing.
• Avoid alcohol and tobacco for 24 hours prior to the test.
• Do not stop taking any medications without your physician’s approval.
The audiologist will interpret your results and send them to the referring physician. Please allow up to 7 days for this. Your physician will then review the results with you and determine your best treatment plan or options. Your treatment will depend on your diagnosis:
• Physical therapy
• Positioning maneuvers
• Diet and lifestyle changes

Premium Care Program
Our Premium Care Program, implemented in 2012, offers free batteries for the life of the hearing aids and special walk-in hours each day. These walk-in hours are for cleaning, preventative maintenance, and batteries or supplies only. Most hearing aids are included in this program at no extra charge. Basic level hearing aids can opt-in for $150 per hearing aid, and this amount will be credited toward the purchase of new hearing aids in the future.
